Soul Dental Pain & Dental Anxiety Management

Sedation Dentistry

The idea of pain during a dental procedure can be a source of anxiety and fear for many people. This is perfectly natural, and we’re sensitive to the fact that all patients have different needs around it. Providing solid dental care, to us at Soul Dental in NYC, means including comprehensive pain management and focusing on patient comfort. That’s why we are so proud to offer a range of dental sedation and anesthesia options to ensure a calm and pain-free experience for our patients.

Each patient is unique in their concerns, so we take the time to listen attentively, understand your anxieties, and tailor your treatment accordingly. We can create a personalized sedation and anesthesia plan that aligns with your specific comfort requirements after assessing and discussing your situation.

Dental Pain vs Dental Anxiety

At Soul Dental, we offer a variety of ways to make your experience with us pleasant, whether you’re coming in for a simple exam and cleaning or a more involved procedure. And we want to acknowledge that this aspect of visiting the dentist is kind of a “black box.” We’re just supposed to suck it up and fearlessly enter the dentist’s office, even when we don’t know what to expect. We know it isn’t this simple, and we want to provide as much reassuring knowledge as you need before your visit.

Let’s take a look, head-on, at the most common issues. We find there are generally two areas of concern for patients:

  • Will my dental procedure be painful?
  • I am feeling anxious or fearful about the possibility of pain or other types of discomfort.

We want to take a moment to unpack both of these areas of concern so you know exactly what goes on behind these walls and what resources are available.

Dental Pain

This is a pretty easy one. Thanks to modern anesthesia and sedation options, dental pain is pretty much a thing of the past. Nothing is all true all of the time, and of course there can be rare exceptions, but we want to reassure you that–as a Soul Dental patient–your odds of being one of those exceptions are very, very low. (And if you ever do begin to feel pain during a procedure, we can stop our work and provide more anesthesia!)

Because we offer the full range of anesthesia and sedation, encourage and provide open communication, and place a high level of attention on patient comfort, you can absolutely expect a painless dental procedure. Local anesthesia injections are the worst part of most procedures, and we precede that with a topical numbing gel. You’re in good, careful hands with our doctors.

Dental Fear or Anxiety

We appreciate that this one is a little more complicated. Any individual person on any given day is going to have an entirely unique experience as far as this is concerned. But not to worry! We’re here to help you navigate any fear or anxiety you may have from the very first moment of contact.

Our doctors and staff are experienced and calm because they do this work every single day, but we never forget that you’re coming to the dentist’s office a couple or few times a year. We know you may have had scary experiences with dentists in the past. And we also know that fear can be totally irrational. You don’t even have to have a reason for feeling anxious about the dentist. We will be so happy to help you navigate these feelings, no matter their source. Read on to learn about how we help our patients manage dental fear and anxiety.

Understanding Sedation Dentistry

There are many options available to you if you’re experiencing anxiety. We’re very serious about your comfort–even if you’re feeling anxiety about an exam and cleaning, we’re here to help you through it. Please let us know! At Soul Dental, we want you to be confident in your sedation plan and we’re here to answer any questions you may have.

What Is Sedation?

Sedation involves the use of medication to help you relax and alleviate anxiety during dental treatment. It is often used for patients with dental fear or those undergoing lengthy procedures. Sedatives can be administered intravenously (IV), as nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), or as a simple oral medication. Not to be confused with anesthesia (discussed below), sedation affects your mood and perception of your dental experience.

Is Sedation Safe?

Dental sedation is a widely used technique that has been proven to be safe and effective. Our experienced team of specialists is trained to administer sedation carefully and safely to ensure your comfort throughout the dental procedure. We will be happy to address any concerns you may have and are here to provide the highest quality of care in a secure and relaxing environment. We want you to feel safe and supported at Soul Dental.

Sedation Options at Soul Dental

Your needs are unique to you and may even change from one experience to the next. Once we have a dental treatment plan in place and have agreed upon the right choices for your situation, we will discuss your sedation options. This decision will be based on factors including:

  • Your preference
  • Your medical needs, such as existing health conditions
  • Any prescription medication you may be taking
  • The type of procedure you’re receiving

Oral Medication: Powerful Anti-Anxiety Medication

We offer oral medication as a sedation option for patients who experience significant anxiety during dental visits. This powerful anti-anxiety medication is typically prescribed and taken about an hour before the dental appointment. It helps patients feel relaxed and at ease during the procedure. It is important to note that patients who choose oral medication for sedation will require an escort to and from their appointment as the medication may cause drowsiness and impair coordination.

IV Sedation: Conscious Sedation

IV sedation, also known as conscious sedation, is another option available at Soul Dental. Unlike general anesthesia, patients who receive IV sedation remain conscious, but in a deeply relaxed state throughout the procedure. For oral surgery patients, it is administered intravenously by oral surgeon, Dr. Shanin. For all other patients requiring IV sedation, it will be administered by our anesthesiologist. Their expertise and experience allow for precise control over the sedative effects. IV sedation is an excellent choice for patients with dental anxiety or for those undergoing more complex procedures.

You can relax knowing our experienced team will monitor you closely to ensure your safety and comfort during the entire procedure. Patients will require an escort and cannot drive themselves, as this is a stronger form of sedation.

Nitrous Oxide, aka Laughing Gas

Nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas,” is a safe and effective method to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable. It is a mild sedative administered through a mask that is placed over your nose. As with the other forms of sedation, nitrous oxide allows you to remain conscious and able to communicate with your dentist. One of the benefits of nitrous oxide is that its effects wear off quickly after the procedure and patients don’t require an escort or a ride.

Comprehensive Pain Management

Now that we’ve addressed the mental component of comfort in dentistry, let’s take a look at the physical aspect–pain management. Pain management is a top priority at Soul Dental when it comes to dental procedures. We aim to create a comfortable and relaxing environment for our patients, ensuring that their experience exceeds expectations. Our dental pain management approach includes:

  • Expert specialists: Our team of board-certified specialists brings a wealth of experience to manage complex treatments in one place. These experts help manage pain throughout the entire treatment process.

Your comfort is our priority at Soul Dental. We strive to exceed your expectations and provide you with a pain-free dental experience.

Types of Anesthesia for Pain Management

Different procedures and patients may require different levels of anesthesia. Our experienced team of dental professionals are trained in various anesthesia techniques and can help determine which form of anesthesia is best for you.

Local Anesthesia: Lidocaine

Local anesthesia is the most commonly used type of dental anesthesia. We administer Lidocaine to numb a specific area of the mouth. This ensures that you do not feel any pain or discomfort during your dental procedure.

Local anesthesia is commonly used for procedures such as fillings, root canals, and tooth extractions. The effects of Lidocaine wear off within a few hours, allowing you to resume your normal activities. It is advisable to wait until the numbness wears off before eating to avoid accidentally biting your tongue, cheek, or lip. Patients do not require an escort to and from their appointment when receiving local anesthesia at Soul Dental.
